On Thursday, the artist André Marzuk was present for the opening of his new exhibition, “THE POWER AND THE GRACE.” A unique art that cannot leave anyone indifferent.
The Librairie-Galerie Matarasso, located at 46 boulevard Risso, is hosting this exhibition from March 7th to 23rd, 2024. André Marzuk presents here works on paper as well as two new books. The artist is a big fan of poetry, bringing together poems and drawings for a result that will push you towards meditation. The works exhibited here are original, with André Marzuk showcasing creativity by exhibiting flame drawings and gold leaf paintings.
The flame drawings are very interesting to observe. They inscribe on paper the hypnotic dance that a flame can have, accompanied by poems by Jalal ad-Din Rumi or even Yvon Le Men who won the 2019 Goncourt Prize for poetry. It’s surprising, very soothing, as you easily find yourself admiring what you see and read.
The gold leaf paintings fall within the same register, but this time with a much more luminous aspect. However, it is not the movement of a flame that is captured on the sheet, but rather the movement of a gesture. You can easily discern the painter’s gesture, again accompanied by poems. The gold leaves are delicately placed to avoid damaging them, resulting in a very elegant finish.

How did it all begin?
André Marzuk is a Nice-based artist whose work is nourished by his knowledge and passion for poetry. He explores many different styles, making him an enigma. Ranging from abstract to figurative, he dabbles in everything, but here we are interested in his abstract drawings. It all began in 1969 in Paris, when flame drawing was just starting. He mingles with many poets who instill in him a love for this discipline. However, it is indeed in 1999 that it took another dimension; from that moment on, André Marzuk created more than 1600 flame drawings. Numerous attempts are necessary to achieve the perfect drawing, with the goal of not burning the paper. He works a lot with intuition, carrying out successive trials until he finds the rare gem.
Don’t hesitate to drop by the bookstore to admire his works!
