The practice of highlining is now banned in the major natural parks of the Alpes-Maritimes.

A prefectural decree now regulates the practice of this discipline in the department and even prohibits it in certain natural parks in the Alpes-Maritimes.

This spectacular practice, which involves balancing on a tightrope set high above the ground, will now be very strictly regulated following a decision by the prefecture.

Given that this activity takes place at “critical ground heights,” often between two cliffs, compared to slackline which is practiced at “head height,” the prefecture considers the risk of accidents to be evident.

Among the reasons for banning this practice, it is mentioned that “the growing enthusiasm for this activity can generate nuisances to the natural environment, the quality of habitats, and the tranquility of native species.”

All installation and practice of highline is now strictly forbidden in the core area of the Mercantour National Park, in natural reserves, and in all departmental natural parks. However, it is permitted in sites “regulated by a prefectural biotope decree.”

An assessment protocol is required in advance for practice sites registered in the PDESI (Departmental Plan for Spaces, Sites, and Routes). The list of these sites is available on the prefecture’s website.

Besides these sites, even temporary practice of highline must mandatory be subject to the mayor’s authorization and, if necessary, an assessment of Natura 2000 impacts.
