Since September 1st, the price of certain brands of cigarette packs has decreased in France.
Smoking is almost always just as expensive… The price of tobacco is a public health issue. In France, tobacco is responsible for 75,000 deaths each year.
So, to encourage smokers to reduce or even stop their consumption, the price of cigarette packs has consistently increased.
Over the last 20 years, it has risen from 3 to 10 โฌ. In the past 10 years, the price has increased by more than 68%.
However, while this increase has discouraged some smokers, others are turning to neighboring countries where tobacco prices are lower, notably in Andorra where a pack of cigarettes costs 4 โฌ.
In France, on September 1st, the price of cigarette packs decreased by approximately 1%, which represents about 10 cents.
The government has frozen tobacco taxation for 2021 and 2022. With this measure, some cigarette packs have fallen back below the symbolic threshold of 10 โฌ.
