Christian Estrosi, Mayor of Nice and President of the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolitan Area, along with Alain Frère, Vice-President of the General Council and Mayor of Tourrette-Levens, will join the residents of Tourrette-Levens to celebrate the traditional Feast of the Limaces on Saturday, June 9, 2012.
At 9:00 PM, a solemn high mass will be celebrated in the Church of Sainte-Rosalie by Father Alain Kadhi, Pastor of the Saint-Pons Parish.
Afterward, around 10:15 PM, the procession will pass through the village streets, illuminated by thousands of shells set up by the faithful members of local associations. The procession will then return to the church.
The “procession of the limaces” refers to the custom of lighting the streets with snail shells (limaça) during the procession of the Octave of Corpus Christi. At the beginning of the century, this practice was widespread throughout the County of Nice. It has been revived or continues to be observed in a few villages: in Bouyon, Sigale, Gorbio, Roquestéron, Tourrette-Levens, and others.
