The radar on the Promenade des Anglais is changing location again.

Set up since May 2025, the mobile construction radar continues its movements on the Promenade des Anglais. At the end of March, a new position was decided near the airport, after several weeks near Fabron.

The mobile construction radar installed on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice continues to change location. This device, in service since May 27, 2025, was relocated again at the end of March. After an extended period in the Fabron district, the radar is now located near Nice Côte d’Azur Airport, in the east-west direction towards Saint-Laurent-du-Var.

Visible to motorists, this radar, which resembles a construction device (a gray cube), is positioned at the roadside. This radar is part of a strategy to control speed on a particularly busy and narrow traffic axis. The speed limit remains set at 50 km/h on the entire Promenade des Anglais. The stated objective is to reduce risky behaviors on this road that runs along the Nice coastline.

Each day, nearly 175,000 vehicles circulate on this artery. State services and the municipality have been monitoring the road situation on this axis for several years. Between 2019 and today, nineteen people have lost their lives and forty-nine have been seriously injured on this stretch.

A radar regularly moved on the Promenade des Anglais

The principle of the construction radar is based on its mobility. Unlike a fixed device, this device can be moved between several points identified as sensitive. This characteristic allows it to change drivers’ habits and strengthen the deterrent effect.

During March, the radar remained positioned at Fabron, just after an intersection equipped with a traffic light. This prolonged stay had made its presence well-known to regular users. The change at the end of the month marks a return to a rotation logic.

The radar is now installed before the airport terminal, just after the Sheraton Hotel. This area is a significant point of passage, especially for vehicles in transit to the west of the department. The roadside positioning aims to capture speeding in a sector where traffic remains dense.

This device remains temporary. The previous municipality had mentioned installing four fixed radars on the Promenade des Anglais. At this stage, no official announcement has been made by the Alpes-Maritimes prefecture regarding a definitive deployment.

The capital of the Alpes-Maritimes emphasizes the severity of the local road toll. Authorities highlight the radar’s deterrent role to limit speeding, particularly on a road where traffic remains heavy throughout the day.

Persistent Criticisms

Despite these arguments, the device continues to provoke reactions. Some users point to the radar’s positioning, sometimes deemed unsuitable. Installed partly on the road and on the sidewalk, the box could pose an obstacle for some users.

Testimonies mention risks for two-wheeled vehicle drivers, but also for pedestrians and scooter users. Other voices suggest that sustainable arrangements, such as speed bumps or additional traffic lights, could have been favored.

Pending potential announcements about fixed equipment, the presence of this mobile radar is likely to continue evolving along the Promenade des Anglais. Motorists are encouraged to comply with the speed limit on this axis where traffic remains heavy.

Let’s recall that since last November 3rd, three unmarked vehicles equipped with radars have been circulating on the roads of the Alpes-Maritimes department for the same purpose: to control road users’ speed.
