Last August, an accident in Puget-Théniers resulted in two deaths.
On Tuesday, August 31, around 5:30 PM, a serious accident occurred involving a driver and a group of four motorcyclists. The accident took place on the RD 6202, 2 kilometers before Puget-Théniers, in the direction of Nice-Digne.
Despite the quick arrival of emergency services at the scene, two people lost their lives, two firefighters from Monaco: Sergeant Stéphan Hertier and firefighter Matis Canavese.
The tragedy stirred a lot of emotions in the region, and yesterday the driver responsible for the accident appeared before the Nice criminal court.
The 24-year-old driver, Alexis Lababsa, tested positive for cannabis and admitted to daily use. Nonetheless, he does not consider drugs to be the cause of the accident, rather claiming he fell asleep at the wheel. However, the judges and the prosecutor do not believe him and suspect he was using his phone.
In the end, the 24-year-old man was sentenced to five years in prison, with one year suspended on probation. His driving license was also revoked. He had already been ordered to pay several tens of thousands of euros to the victims’ families.
