The collection of recycled phones, a great initiative to raise young peopleโs awareness of the environmental issues related to digital technology.
This is the objective of the tripartite agreement between the Alpes-Maritimes Department, the Nice Academy, and Orange: to instill an educational awareness in middle school students about the environmental issues related to digital technology through an exemplary initiative involving the collection and recycling of used mobile phones, tablets, and mobile accessories (referred to as “devices”) intended for all public and private middle schools in the Alpes-Maritimes.
Once in the collector, the used mobile begins its journey through the solidarity recycling channel. To sort the collected mobiles, Orange calls upon the integration company Les Ateliers du Bocage, located in France. The mobiles that are in working condition are tested and their data is erased. They are then refurbished and resold. The entirety of the profits from this channel is donated to Emmaus International.
This collection will take place until June 30 and will take the form of an inter-school Challenge with, at the end, an award ceremony to be held in September. The three schools that have sent back the most boxes filled with recycled mobiles will be rewarded with a trophy, a connected object, a visit to the Maison de lโIntelligence Artificielle in Sophia Antipolis, as well as participation in an introductory “supercoders” workshop on software development focusing on digital pollution.
