Out of the 51,446 candidates in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur who took the 2016 baccalaureate exams, 45,205 (87.8% compared to the national average of 89.3%) obtained the precious diploma. Of these, 3,810, or 7%, received the “very good” distinction.
A delegation was received at the Regional Hotel by President Christian Estrosi, who, through his proactive policies, “wishes to promote equal opportunities, encourage further studies, and promote excellence.”
How? It was he himself who announced it while addressing the young baccalaureate graduates:
“In a crisis context that particularly affects the youth, I have decided to reinstate the merit scholarship and to implement, starting from the 2016 school year, a program to facilitate the journey of deserving students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds in their higher education.
The regional assembly thus voted on June 24th to implement this measure, which will provide 2,700 euros to each beneficiary for an estimated amount of over 2 million euros per year, which will be covered by the regional budget.
Thanks to this measure, the reduction in the amount of merit scholarships (from 1,800 to 900 euros) decided by the Government since 2015 will be fully compensated.
The beneficiaries will be scholarship students who obtained a “Very Good” distinction in the baccalaureate, who wish to pursue higher education in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, and who will have been selected under the national program.
Based on data provided by the CROUS of the two academies in the region, nearly 800 young people will benefit from this additional regional aid.
