The reinforced security measures for All Saints’ Day and the start of the school year

Latest News

Following the attack that took place the day before yesterday at the Notre Dame Basilica in Nice, a meeting was held between the Mayor of Nice, the Prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes, the Public Prosecutor, the departmental military delegate, the DDSP, the gendarmerie, and the municipal police to enhance security, particularly with the approach of All Saints’ Day and the return to school.

After this meeting, a coordination point was held at the prefecture with representatives from the city of Nice, the National Education services, the national police, the municipal police, the Sentinelle forces, the mobile gendarmes, and the diocese of Nice to continue and intensify the joint security work that will be conducted in the coming days.

Several key areas of focus were discussed:

Securing religious ceremonies for the All Saints’ Day weekend;
Ensuring security regarding visits to cemeteries;
Securing educational establishments in anticipation of the school reopening on Monday, November 2.

and decisions were made:

The coordination between state security forces and the municipal police will thus ensure everyone’s safety through their interoperability and complementarity.

To achieve this, the presence of national police officers, municipal police, and Sentinelle military personnel is planned to protect places of worship, cemeteries, and schools, both in static and dynamic ways, to counter existing threats. The city of Nice will benefit from an increase of 120 police officers.

To ensure strengthened security in an emergency attack context, cemeteries will have limited hours from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Municipal Police will also reinforce surveillance with cameras around cemeteries, places of worship, and schools.

In this context, the elevation of the Vigipirate plan to the “emergency attack” level will allow the implementation of various measures which will help reduce activities near sensitive establishments and enable more effective access control.

At the same time, all the resources offered by the video surveillance systems will be utilized.

Call for vigilance

Any abnormal behavior, any suspicious object, should be reported without delay to the national or municipal police services.
