The Republic of Nissa will pay official tribute to a child of Nissa: Pepin Garibaldi (1807-1882) this Monday, July 4th at 7 PM at Garibaldi Square in Nissa, in front of his statue.
“This will be the 10th time we honor our hero since his bicentenary in 2007,” says Cristou Daurore, its president.
He adds: “On this occasion, we will unveil the head of the chariot that was created in 2007.”
As a reminder: the hero of two worlds (South America and Europe) was born at the port of Nissa on July 4, 1807, and did not want Nissa to become French. In September 1870, the people of Nissa removed the plaques of Napoleon Square to put the name GARIBALDI.
On September 28, 2014, the Republic of Nissa changed the name of Masséna Square to plaça dei Barbets.
The flags present will be the following: Republic of Nissa, Federal Occitan Republic, and European Union (Garibaldi wanted Nissa to be the capital of Europe).
