The election for the presidency of the Lower House takes place during a secret ballot vote in the first session.
During the presidential elections, it is the dean of the National Assembly, in this case, the deputy from Bouches-du-Rhรดne of the National Rally (RN) โ Josรฉ Gonzalez, 79 years old, who assumed this role.
Unless there is a resignation, the President of the National Assembly is elected for the duration of their term as a deputy. During the last legislature, it was the deputy from Loire-Atlantique, Franรงois de Rugy, who first held the position until he joined the government in September 2018. It was the Finistรจre deputy, Richard Ferrand, who succeeded him.
Alongside six vice-presidents who can substitute and direct the sessions, the occupant of the Lassay mansion must be “the guarantor of the proper conduct of discussions” and must ensure “discipline and respect among deputies in the chamber”. They can impose sanctions against members who do not follow the rules.
The verdict of this first round came in a little before 6 PM. None of the candidates managed to gather enough to secure the presidency, so a second round will be organized. Two deputies clearly stand out from their three competitors:
Yaรซl Braun-Pivet (Renaissance); 238 votes, and Fatiha Keloua-Hachi (NUPES), 146.
