The oldest library in Nice, located at 21 bis Boulevard Dubouchage, will be closed until June 20. The reason: the installation of a long-awaited air conditioning system.
In response to high temperatures and to improve reader comfort, the city of Nice has decided to equip the library with an air conditioning system. The works, scheduled for ten days, will cause too much disruption to keep the venue open to the public. The doors will therefore remain closed from June 10 to 20.
The reopening is planned for Saturday, June 21.
A place filled with history
The building, built in 1870, was transformed into a library in 1925.
It had already undergone extensive renovation in 2017, initiated by Christian Estrosi. However, the architectural complexity of the site had so far hindered the installation of a cooling system. After several technical studies, a heritage-friendly solution was finally approved.
A tribute to a writer fond of Nice
The venue is named after Romain Gary, a major figure in French literature and a former resistance fighter. Born on May 21, 1914, he arrived in Nice at the age of 14 with his mother. It was in this city that he built his first dreams.
This novelist was also the only one to win the Goncourt Prize twice.
His love for the city of Nice was so great that he dedicated one of his books to it: โThe Promise of Dawnโ. And in another book, titled โWhite Dogโ, he evoked with emotion โmy dear city of Nice, almost nativeโ.
