This summer, the Chalets des Roses school underwent numerous adjustments. Work was carried out to improve the comfort of studying and working. Measures that concern 69 establishments in the city of Nice.
This Friday, the mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, visited the Chalets des Roses nursery school, which was renovated this summer. This establishment is part of the 69 nursery and elementary schools that underwent renovation work. In total, 90 operations were carried out during the summer period. Operations conducted in “a global strategy of modernization and sustainable improvement of the quality of life at school,” according to the town hall.
Within the Chalets des Roses school, at 59 Boulevard de la Madeleine, the work varied. The play area of the nursery was completely renovated. The asphalt on the ground was replaced with wood chips. Introduced greenery that will help cool the ground. This development results in a “reduction of 300 kilos of CO2 per year,” according to the town hall. Measures that are linked to the intention to combat heatwave periods, which the city of Nice experienced during this summer period, and which could occur again in the future.
By the start of the school year, 228 m² of the playground will be greening. This summer, five schools experienced this change: the Bellanda and Chalet des Roses nurseries, and the Caucade, du Château, and Saint-Barthélemy 1 elementary schools.
“Minus five to minus ten degrees on ground temperature“
The impact of this greening of the ground is enormous, according to Pierre Fiori, municipal councilor. “It will change ground temperatures by minus five to minus ten degrees during heatwave periods.” While this change is essential in the face of rising temperatures in the region, it is not enough. “The fight against climate change is the combination of several actions. There is the permeabilization of the soil, the planting of trees to create shade, the installation of double glazing with, starting this year, the use of specific anti-heat glazing,” explains Pierre Fiori.
The school’s dojo will also be renovated as part of these works. A refurbishment is planned for the start of the school year in September. Next year, it will be the sports facilities of the elementary school that will undergo renovations. On the sports fields, seven trees will be planted to create shade over the entire yard and thus cool the ground.
A total investment of 3.6 million euros
The greening of the playgrounds is one of the summer developments, among many others. In total, an investment of 3.6 million euros was launched by the Nice town hall. Here are the various changes according to the needs of each establishment: the replacement of joineries, waterproofing works, installation of ceiling fans, modernization of air conditioning and heating systems, improvement of the acoustics in dining rooms.
Work and adjustments that will continue in the summer of 2026, particularly in establishments that were not concerned this year.
