On the occasion of June 21, marking the 75th anniversary of the arrest of Jean Moulin in Caluire, who was murdered by the Gestapo on July 8, 1943, the departmental secretary of the Socialist Party, Xavier Garcia, wrote to the Mayor of Nice to propose renaming a section of Rue de France after him, where the resistance hero had taken up residence.
His intention is noble and should be embraced by a Mayor who prides himself on being a republican Gaullist. Indeed, Jean Moulin was General De Gaulle’s representative in France, who appointed him as the head of the National Council of Resistance.
โDuring his years of resistance, his connection to Nice was very significant. He frequently stayed there from 1942, and it was at 22 Rue de France that he opened the Romanin Gallery, inaugurated in February 1943, which became the site of numerous resistance activities.
It would be a magnificent symbol if, for the year marking the 75th anniversary of his sacrifice, a part of Rue de France, which housed his clandestine activities and bears the name of the country he so heroically served, were renamed Rue Jean Moulin.โ
Xavier Garcia, departmental secretary of the Socialist Party
