The “SOS Amazonia Tour,” which aims to draw the world’s attention to the deforestation of the Amazon and the fate of the Indigenous peoples, made a stop in Nice. On this occasion, Christian Estrosi welcomed chiefs Raoni and Megaron to Villa Massรฉna.
As part of the fifth “Environmental Trophies” ceremony at Villa Massรฉna, Deputy Mayor Christian Estrosi had the privilege and honor of receiving chiefs Raoni Metuktire, leader of the Brazilian Kayapo people, and Megaron Txucarramae, the keeper of the flame.
After several stops in different European cities, it is in Nice that the chiefs chose to pause for their “SOS Amazรดnia Tour.” A few days before the kickoff of the World Cup in Brazil, they wish to raise public awareness about the dangers of the Amazon’s deforestation.
Christian Estrosi warmly paid tribute to the two chiefs in their relentless fight across the globe for many years now. He also wished to thank the children, associations, and individuals who participated in the “Environmental Trophies.”
Drawing on the struggle of the Amazonian chiefs, the Deputy Mayor reminded that it was essential for the Nice agglomeration to preserve “the quality of its water, its air, its light, the beauty of its urban and rural landscapes, the purity of its mountains and sea,” because all these elements “are the first wealth, both human and economic, of the city.”
The meeting continued with the planting of a Jacaranda mimosifolia (or blue flamboyant) in the Villa Massรฉna park. This tree, native to Brazil, symbolizes the bond that unites the city of Nice to the Kayapo people in the fight against deforestation.
