This week, the region unveiled the main points of its cancer plan, which will be implemented until 2027 in direct partnership with the State.
The region had already taken this initiative in 2018 by launching its regional cancer plan, amounting to 28 million euros, a first in France. This Tuesday, Renaud Muselier presented the renewal of this Cancer plan, mainly aimed at improving screening, healthcare provision, and research. This plan is built around four main axes.
1. Improve screening and prevention
In the PACA region, cancer causes 27% of all deaths, which equates to 12,500 deaths each year. “The region has the highest cancer incidence in France among women. […] We are behind on organized screening. […] We are behind on vaccination,” stated Renaud Muselier, president of the region.
Thus, the region wishes to continue the development of its prevention services in regional health houses. It also plans to implement screening buses, similar to vaccination buses. Finally, the region intends to promote vaccination against the human papillomavirus, as the region lags behind in this vaccination, by seven points below the national average.
2. Strengthen healthcare provision and support for patients and their families
In collaboration with the Regional Health Agency, the French Hospital Federation, and healthcare facilities, the region is committed to supporting the acquisition of biomedical equipment and the digitization of anatomical pathology, enabling faster diagnosis and treatment.
The region will also emphasize support for adapted physical activity and the development of care pathways and support services.
3. Develop research
With 21 million euros dedicated to this axis, research is the area to which the region attaches the most importance. The region aims to promote the development of new treatments, artificial intelligence applied to oncology, research in pediatric oncology, and combatting cancers with poor prognosis.
4. Strengthen innovations and their economic impact
The region aims to support the research and development of regional companies in the fight against cancer. It also plans to mobilize the regional interest organization “innovative therapies” and to encourage the creation of regional startups.
