The State asks EDF to sell more electricity at a low price.

The government has committed to limiting the increase in French electricity bills to 4% in 2022.

Amid soaring energy prices and high inflation, the government wants to keep its promise to limit the rise in French electricity bills to 4% in 2022.

On the evening of Thursday, January 13, Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire announced that the state would ask EDF to lower its rates, and therefore to sell more electricity at a reduced price to its competitors.

This is in line with what Prime Minister Jean Castex announced at the end of September. He indeed announced a “tariff shield” on energy.

Being forced to sell a larger volume of cheap electricity to its competitors is not in favor of this French electricity production supply company, this measure will cost them between 7.7 billion and 8.4 billion euros, estimated Bruno Le Maire.
