The Super 8 Meetings of Nice will take place from November 27 to 29 in various locations in Nice and Carros. The festival will feature screenings, workshops, and discussions centered around analog cinema.
The Super 8 Meetings of Nice return for a 26th edition spanning from Thursday, November 27 to Saturday, November 29. Three days to explore a cinema that continues to spark curiosity and commitment. This new edition will unfold in several locations: the Variรฉtรฉs and Jean-Paul Belmondo cinemas, the Espace Laure Ecard, and the International Center for Contemporary Art (CIAC) in Carros. The festival is part of The Autumn of Image, a cycle led by La Bande Passante, networking numerous events related to cinema, photography, and video from September 20 to November 30, 2025.
The central guest of this edition will be Michel-Antoine Chappuis, a notable figure of the Super 8 festival in Neuchรขtel. He will share his practice of analog media and accompany several events. The public will be able to meet other enthusiasts from England, Corsica, the Mediterranean, and Cambridge. The team from Regard Indรฉpendant, organizer of the event, continues its work to shine a light on films shot in a format to which it has been devoted for over twenty years.
Screenings, Workshops, and Tributes
The opening night will be held at Espace Laure Ecard. The audience will discover a first set of films from Straight 8 and the Super 8 festival in Neuchรขtel. A cine-concert led by Patrick Vaillant will accompany a filmed archive about the perfumeries of Grasse. A second cine-concert will be conducted by Josรฉ Santoro featuring early short films by filmmaker Chantal Akerman. The evening will also include a moment dedicated to poetry with Tristan Blumel. Several offerings will complement this launch.
On Friday, the day will take place at the CIAC in Carros. A Super 8 workshop will be led by Michel-Antoine Chappuis, Thierry Bonnaud, and Justyna Ptak. Participants will work on black and white film and use a “caffenol” development, described as a non-toxic developer. The workshop will be held in the old village before returning to the CIAC to view the results. The recorded images will then be screened during the Saturday session at 2 PM at the Variรฉtรฉs cinema.
The exhibition โCarros en lumiรจre. Photographies 1983-2025,โ presented by รloรฏse Baille, will accompany this day. It brings together three resident artists who juxtapose their creations with photographic archives of the territory.
Friday evening will continue at the Jean-Paul Belmondo cinema. An initial program will be dedicated to films by Dominique Maestrati, Laurence Rebouillon, and Bรฉrenger Thouin. It will gather Allindรฌ, a Corsican and Mediterranean distributor, as well as the Short Film Agency. A second program, “Of Fire and Water,” will offer a more experimental approach, with works by Michel Schneider, Jeff Scherr, JJ. Martinod and BC. Walke, Pablo Mazzolo, Jรฉrรดme Hill, and Malena Szlam.
On Saturday, the Variรฉtรฉs cinema will host the entire day. A tribute will be paid to Jean-Pierre Putters, critic and initiator of a Super 8 festival in the 1980s. The documentary Super 8 Madness by Fabrice Blin will be screened for this occasion. The afternoon will also feature short films made in various workshops.
In the evening, the public will attend the Grand Evening of the Super 8. Spectators will discover the “Inferno or Paradise” collection. Eighteen films made according to the “shot-edited” rule will be screened. Directors and teams will discover their films along with the audience. This moment will mark the end of the festival before the award ceremony.
For twenty-five years, Regard Indรฉpendant has supported various forms of independent creation. Since 2004, the association has championed the use of Super 8, due to an aesthetic choice and a passion for technical artistry. It has thus produced nearly three hundred films made by about one hundred filmmakers. The Meetings extend this work, bringing together creators, audiences, and the curious around a format that retains a unique place in the cinematographic landscape.
