This conference is part of the cycle “The County of Nice in the Baroque Age,” organized from October to December 2011 by the Historical Heritage Directorate under the impetus of Jean-Marc Giaume, Municipal Councilor delegated to the historical Heritage, Archeology, and Niçois Language and Culture.
The conference will be dedicated to the magnificent work Novum Theatrum, a true self-portrait of baroque society and the worldview it developed in the 17th and 18th centuries. The plates composing the two volumes of the work are relatively well known, but the accompanying texts, which remarkably illuminate this essential moment in European civilizations, are less often focused on. The speaker will strive to restore to this authentic baroque monument its true artistic, intellectual, and political dimension.
After having held various positions in the museums of Grasse, Cannes, and Nice, Jean-Loup Fontana was appointed Deputy Director of Museums of Nice. In 1982, at the time of the vote on the first decentralization law, he was called upon by the President of the General Council of Alpes-Maritimes who wished to develop a cultural action in the midland and highland areas. Since that date, he has held the position of Departmental Curator of Heritage with a mission to assist municipalities in the management and publication of their historical, artistic, and cultural heritage.
