The trial of Martine Landry, the head of Amnesty International Nice, postponed to February 14 at 1:30 PM, at the Nice courthouse. She faces 5 years in prison and a 30,000-euro fine.
Martine Landry, the head of Amnesty International in Nice, faces justice this afternoon, before her trial was postponed.
The court accuses the head of Amnesty International of having, on the last July 28, facilitated the entry of two foreign minors in an irregular situation.
Unfortunately, on this point, the much-anticipated debate did not occur. The prosecutor requested a postponement, following a lack of documentation regarding these young migrants.
A Completely Legal Story
Martine Landry met the two young Guineans at Menton Garavan station. At the time, she recounts, they had been twice sent back to Italy by the French border guards. Last July 28, the activist then attempted to intervene to help them cross the border. Or more precisely, to help them move from the Italian border post to the French side. A border crossing that leads to her appearance in court.
Solidarity is Not a Crime
Tried at 1 PM this afternoon, the head of Amnesty International Nice could count on the support of her supporters. Indeed, 100 people gathered in front of the Nice courthouse shortly before the hearing to say “No to the crime of solidarity.” A cry of anger to demand “Justice for Martine.” For David Nakache, a member of all citizens, “Instead of prosecuting an activist and her actions, we should prosecute the French state that sent back minors.”
The Trial of the Heart
Laure Palun, the general coordinator of Anafe, also present this afternoon in front of the Nice courthouse, does not hide her resentment towards the French state. A state guilty in her eyes of a lack of humanity towards people who only wish to live in peace. She explains: “those who want to help migrants and refugees seeking refuge with us are criminalized. A shame for her. For her, this afternoon is a trial of humanity and that of the heart.”
A call to stop the ill-treatment suffered by migrants trying by all means to cross the border.
