In the hours following the call from certain associations, the University of Nice published this statement on its website: “The lecture by Jean Bricmont on ‘Understanding Quantum Mechanics’ is canceled due to the tensions that its announcement may have caused in civil society and the academic world (and even within our respective laboratories). The conditions for a peaceful scientific debate are not met.”
For David Nakache, president of Tous Citoyens: “We have played our role as a citizen watchdog and can be pleased with that. However, it is very concerning that the university needed our intervention to raise ethical questions and to internally debate the choice of its guests. We hope that this decision marks the beginning of a genuine awareness. The fight against far-right ideologies should not be limited to alarmist statements following election results; it must be waged every day.”
