The University of Nice Sophia Antipolis is making the web a conference.

Latest News

Founded in October 1994 by Tim Berners-Lee (the inventor of the World Wide Web), the W3C aims to promote the scalability of the Web and ensure its interoperability. The activities of the W3C are organized around four main areas: Architecture, Interaction, Technology and Society, and Web Accessibility.

The role of the W3C is:

– to provide as accurate a vision as possible of the future of the Web to enable the development of technical solutions to the challenges it raises;
– to design technologies that align with this vision, taking into account both existing technologies and those to come;
– to participate in the standardization effort of Web technologies by creating specifications (called “recommendations”) that are freely available to everyone (all software developed by the W3C is free and open source software distributed under a license compatible with the GPL license).

Nearly ten years after the creation of the W3C, more than 80 recommendations are available. These documents are supplemented by numerous guidelines and educational documents.

While this mission of standardizing Web technologies is quite well known, it should not overshadow other issues that the W3C tries to address: privacy protection, accessibility for the disabled, innovation in patent management, and the social implications of the โ€œSemantic Web.โ€
