Relying on the vaccination schedule, the mayor of the city of Nice, Christian Estrosi, considers the date of September 15 as irrevocable for the reopening of all cultural activities.

The mayor of the city of Nice, committed to culture within his city, is trying by all means to accelerate the process of reopening places dedicated to culture, a world overwhelmed by the coronavirus crisis for several months. “I have decided to declare September 15, 2021, as the irrevocable date for the reopening of all cultural activities in Nice,” the mayor stated during his address to the cultural community. Why are we talking about September 15? This date is in focus simply because it corresponds to the end of the vaccination planned by the French government with a deadline of August 30.

The current work is essentially dedicated to convincing the government that the measures taken allow the reopening of places such as museums, cinemas, or even the Nice Opera. “Our metropolitan health safety agency is working to build a health and legal case allowing this opening,” declared Christian Estrosi, accompanied by his deputy, Anthony Borrรฉ, as well as figures directly linked to culture like Robert Roux, deputy mayor in charge of Culture.

A necessity for those embodying culture

With no activity for several months, artists and cultural employees are on the brink. Reduced salaries, a professional life with no perception of the future, it’s an entire community put on hold. Despite financial aid from the city of Nice, the cultural world wishes to regain all its capacities. Summer events are notably on the agenda with a book festival or the Nice Jazz Festival scheduled for the end of May and mid-July, respectively.

Christian Estrosi is skeptical about the situation and recalls that Spanish museums never closed; some places must reopen at all costs, and the city of Nice is ready to do everything to revive its culture: “We need to keep our museums alive. We will reopen based on the model of public libraries, with attendance limits, sanitizers, and distancing,” assures the mayor, determined to change things. Theater directors, composers, or artists present during the address are pleased with these encouraging remarks. A still uncertain future but undeniable support from the mayor to reassure them.
