The Young Economic Chamber of Nice Côte d’Azur, in partnership with the Mediterranean Press Club 06, is organizing a debate on the topic: “Is culture truly accessible to everyone?”

Thursday, December 9, 2010, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM
At CCI Nice Côte d’Azur
20, Boulevard Carabacel 06000 NICE

“André Malraux once said, ‘Culture is not inherited, it is conquered.’”

The Regional Council and the City of NICE have understood this well. Thus, the Municipality has implemented a cultural policy for everyone by initiating numerous projects to allow the greatest number of people access, such as “reading-cinema vouchers” or free museum admission, along with numerous events like “C’est pas classique” and the children’s cinema festival…

And yet, has the challenge of getting a broader interest in culture truly been won?

Even though culture is now accessible to everyone, the audience for museums—just to mention this example—still predominantly comes from categories with high economic and cultural capital (57% of college graduates visit museums compared to 14% of non-graduates).

Is interest in culture therefore the result of education?
What additional means can be implemented to make culture more appealing?
Should we rely on other institutions besides parents and schools to serve this noble cause?

Participants in the debate will include: Muriel Marland-Militello, Deputy Mayor of Nice responsible for the City’s Cultural Policy; Cynthia LEMESLE, Artist; Xavier OLLIVRIN, Head of BD Fugue; Véronique Pages, Head of Artistic Carpentry; Robert ROUX, Head of Bleu de France.

The debate will be moderated by Mr. Philippe Tallois, President of the Mediterranean Press Club 06 and independent journalist (TF1, TMC), and Mr. Paul Barelli, Le Monde correspondent in Nice.
