On the occasion of the 77th anniversary of its liberation, Nice pays tribute to its fighters on Saturday.
“Nice liberated, Nice proud, Nice glorious! Nice has never given up on itself, nor given up on France.”
On August 28, 1944, the soldiers of Nice fought against the occupation at the risk of their lives. Their resistance helped accelerate the departure of German troops. During the confrontation, 32 fighters died, and 280 were injured.
On Saturday, for the 77th anniversary of its liberation, the city expresses its gratitude. The traditional memorial circuit begins at 8 a.m. at 5 rue de l’Hôtel-de-Ville in Nice. The procession will pass by the commemorative plaques of the resistance fighters throughout the town, including the level crossing, General De Gaulle Square, and Auguste Blanqui Square.
At 10:30 a.m., the commemorative ceremony will take place at the Rauba Capeù War Memorial. The day will end with fireworks at 10 p.m. on the Quai des États-Unis near the Promenade des Anglais.
The ceremony is conducted in the presence of Christian Estrosi, Mayor of Nice and President of the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis, Bernard Gonzalez, Prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes, Colonel Cyril Iordanow, Head of the 93rd Mountain Artillery Regiment, Marie-Christine Fix, Municipal Councilor, and Philippe Bocquet, Departmental Military Delegate of the Alpes-Maritimes.
