The second and final stage of the Tour des Alpes-Maritimes saw the Frenchman Dorian Godon win in Vence. Christian Scaroni wins the overall classification.
This Sunday marked the end of a three-day series of races in the Alpes-Maritimes. Following the Classic Var and the first stage of the Tour des Alpes-Maritimes, it was the Italian Christian Scaroni who had achieved a double victory. This final day of racing was the opportunity to accomplish a triple win on a finish that was less favorable for him.
Although the stage of the day was as mountainous as the previous day with the climbs of the cols of Eze and Châteauneuf, the finish was more suited to a breakaway specialist. In this type of race, two riders broke away after a few kilometers. Frenchman Louis Barré and Australian Harry Sweeny led the race for over a hundred kilometers before being caught just short of the finish of this ultimate stage of the Tour des Alpes-Maritimes.
No triple win for Christian Scaroni
Behind them, the XDS Astana team of the Tour des Alpes-Maritimes leader Christian Scaroni set a very high pace. But it was the Groupama FDJ team that broke the peloton at the foot of the day’s last challenge. Ultimately, it’s the same riders again. Santiago Buitrago made the first attack at the start of the Montée de la Sine. The Colombian was closely followed by Christian Scaroni and his blue leader’s jersey of the Tour des Alpes-Maritimes. The two men were accompanied by Richard Carapaz and Belgian Jarno Widar. The four were caught by the peloton led by Nice’s Clément Champoussin.
Just before the summit, Buitrago attacked again but was only accompanied by Christian Scaroni. The duo took off and was set to contest the sprint at the finish in Vence. However, their cooperation began to deteriorate, allowing the peloton to catch up. Ultimately, the stage was decided in a sprint with Dorian Godon’s victory from the team Décathlon AG2R la Mondiale. Nice’s own Clément Champoussin finished in a strong 4th place ahead of Andréa Mifsud from team Nice Métropole Côte d’Azur, who concluded the Tour des Alpes-Maritimes well.
In the general classification, Christian Scaroni wins the 2025 edition of the Tour des Alpes-Maritimes.
