Tramway: Line 2 is advancing at full speed!

Latest News

The construction of the West-East line terminus is nearing completion. Let’s take a look behind the scenes of the construction site connecting the tunnel exit and the Port Lympia station.

The light at the end of the tunnel is starting to appear. The site visit took place in the presence of Christian Estrosi, who came to observe the progress of the work. To date, the remaining work involves secondary construction, namely the auxiliary equipment of the site. The connection of Garibaldi to the Port is almost complete, as is the welding of the rails.

The first tramway tests on the port will begin next September, with service scheduled to start in December 2019. It should be noted that the work to restore the networks on Gautier Street will begin in June 2019 and will continue with road works. By the end of September, automobile traffic on the lower part of Gautier Street will resume.

Christian Estrosi expressed his satisfaction with the work. In an effort to “combat urban asphyxiation, traffic saturation, and surface transportation via buses,” Christian Estrosi speaks of an “elimination of 800 buses daily in the city,” which represents a 20% reduction in urban traffic flows.

The ecological aspect is significant since the tramway construction project was part of a green initiative called “Nice, Mediterranean Green City” in 2008. Today, 5,000 trees have been planted along the transport lines, and cycling paths from East to West have been developed.

The Mayor of Nice also announced, in line with the new city developments, the construction of a new railway station by 2021 near the airport, following the closure of the Saint-Augustin station.
