Transportation: the South Region reduces Zou! subscriptions by 20% and focuses on proximity

From July 1, Zou! Express subscriptions will cost 20% less. This measure was voted during the regional plenary assembly on June 25. Other announcements reflect the desire to enhance access to public transportation throughout the South Region.

The Provence-Alpes-Cรดte d’Azur Region voted on a series of measures on June 25 to strengthen the use of public transportation in its territory. The most noticeable will take effect as of July 1, 2025: a 20% reduction on Zou! Express subscriptions.

This decision primarily targets working individuals. They currently make up 96% of the network’s subscribers. The regional executive explains that they aim to reduce the cost of commuting while encouraging people to forgo using their cars.

In practice, the savings will be significant. A monthly subscription for the Marseille-Toulon line will decrease from 138.90 โ‚ฌ to 111.10 โ‚ฌ. For regular users, the gap between the subscription and purchasing single tickets becomes even more significant.

The measure is part of a policy named โ€œTrajectoire VALEURS.โ€ It also supports the implementation of the regional mobility payment, which involves employers in funding public transportation.

โ€œEveryday mobility is a priority for the South Region,โ€ declares Renaud Muselier, president of the Region and associate president of Regions of France. He adds cheerfully: โ€œyou’d have to be crazy not to take Zou!โ€

Upcoming changes in the regional network

Two additional announcements were adopted during this assembly. The first concerns the creation of a unique subscription in 2026. It will allow free travel across all Zou! offerings, including trains, buses, and carpooling. This unique package aims to simplify travelers’ processes, regardless of their mode of transport.

The second novelty will take the form of the first regional carpooling line. Named โ€œZOU! COVOITโ€™,โ€ it will connect Toulon to Cuers. It will be integrated into the Zou! Proximity and Student Pass packages. The idea is to offer a complementary alternative to the train or bus on certain routes.

Another project has also been approved to expand TER ticket sales points. Starting in September 2025, tickets can be purchased in 26 post offices. This decision targets communities where railway counters are absent or open infrequently.

The first cities concerned are spread across the region’s six departments. Among them: Sisteron, Tende, Cassis, Martigues, Bollรจne, and La Garde. The municipalities along the Niceโ€“Tende axis will be prioritized, with the perspective of the planned complete reopening of the line on December 15, 2025.

This partnership complements existing provisions in tourist offices or municipal counters. The goal is to ensure everyone has the opportunity to buy a train ticket near their home.

Renaud Muselier justifies this choice: โ€œthis partnership with La Poste […] responds to a priority: ensuring fair access to public services, including in rural areas.โ€
For Lรฉa Lรฉger-Zurfluh, executive director of La Poste in Provence-Alpes-Cรดte d’Azur, this initiative โ€œhelps improve the residents’ quality of life.โ€
Meanwhile, Delphine Couzi, regional director of SNCF Voyageurs TER Sud, sees it as a way โ€œto facilitate train access throughout the South Region.โ€

With these decisions, the Region aims to make public transportation more accessible without waiting for major developments or an overall reform.
