Travellers: Eric Ciotti reacts

Latest News

The occupation of several plots of land by the traveler community in the department is causing controversy. Alongside Christian Estrosi, Mayor of Nice, Eric Ciotti, president of the general council, felt compelled to react to โ€œthese illegal occupations.โ€ Nice, Mandelieu, Levens, Mougins, and Villeneuve-Loubet are affected.

“This is an unprecedented situation in terms of its scale and the way the state has handled it,” declares Eric Ciotti in a serious tone. 700 caravans belonging to travelers spread throughout the department have angered the president of the general council: “I denounce the violence associated with the settlement of these people. Forceful actions, damage to public property, concrete blocks torn out, and threats against municipal police officers. But what I deplore is the passivity and inaction of the government. One can question why. For what purpose? With political motives? The objective is to raise tensions by applying double standards with these people.”

After the outcry, it’s time for decisions for the UMP deputy: “We, as an association of mayors, unanimously adopt a motion against these actions. We commit to systematically filing complaints with a civil party status against these illegal camps. We are also launching legal proceedings to obtain reimbursement for damages caused due to the government’s inaction.” On the travelers’ side, the municipalities are accused of not complying with the law, specifically of not providing viable land for this community.

Eric Ciotti clarifies: “Reception areas do exist. Four plots have been requisitioned by the prefect, but the travelers do not want to occupy them even though they are equipped with water, electricity, and facilities made mandatory by law.” The situation thus remains tense between the travelers and politicians.
