On October 29, 2020, an act of barbarity plunged Nice into sadness and indignation, shattering innocent lives in the heart of the Basilica of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption. As every year, a tribute was paid to Nadine, Simone, and Vincent.
It was a Thursday around 8:30 AM. That day, three people, united by their faith and humanity, were struck down by an act of blind hatred. Today we remember Nadine Devillers, Simone Barreto Silva, and Vincent Loquรจs. These luminous souls who, despite themselves, became symbols of courage and resilience.
Nadine Devillers, aged 60, was a regular at this basilica. She found solace in daily prayer and reflection there. This sanctuary, which she considered a second home, was supposed to be a place of peace for her, not violence.
Simone Barreto Silva, 44, originally from Brazil, had lived in France for many years. She built her life here, surrounded by her three children. A courageous and caring mother, Simone was appreciated for her smile and determination to offer a bright future to her children.
Vincent Loquรจs, 55, a devoted sacristan, was the heart and soul of the Basilica of Notre-Dame. He embodied the spirit of this church. Always ready to help the parishioners, he watched over this sacred place with dedication.
The tribute four years later
In the face of the pain from this tragedy, the people of Nice united to pay homage to these heroes. The bells of the Basilica tolled this morning. The commemoration began symbolically at 8:30 AM with a laying of wreaths at the foot of the work “The Dove of Peace” by artist Thรฉo Tobiasse. This was followed by a tribute in front of the commemorative plaque inside the Basilica of Notre-Dame in the presence of the victims’ families. Then, a mass was held in the Basilica of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption by Monsignor Jean-Philippe Nault assisted by Father Franklin Parmentier.
This October 29 will remain forever etched in our memories. Not only as a day of mourning but also as a reminder of the light that Nadine, Simone, and Vincent brought to those around them. In their honor, we will not relent in the face of darkness.
