Every year, at nightfall, the City of Nice pays tribute to Torrin and Grassi, two communist activists who were arrested and hanged by the Nazis on July 7, 1944, at the entrance to Place Massรฉna.
Thus, on Saturday, July 7, 2012, at 9:00 PM, Franรงois Rabut, the City Councilor responsible for Veterans Affairs, will go to the corner of Avenue Jean Mรฉdecin and the streets of Hรดtel des Postes and de la Libertรฉ in Nice to lay wreaths in memory of these two martyrs.
At this location, where thousands of Nice residents now pass by, the bodies of Torrin and Grassi were left hanging from the gallows, serving as an “example” and reminding the population of that time that the Nazis would stop at no atrocity to dominate.
This tribute is an opportunity to remind all generations of past events, but also to prevent future occurrences by rallying to defend human dignity and peace.
