With a flawless weekend, Théo Pourchaire has accumulated significant points in the perspective of the Formula 3 World Championship in Spain.
The Formula 3 drivers have unofficially transitioned into the second half of the championship (if the Bahrain and Abu Dhabi GPs are added in a few days). Barcelona was the 6th event of the season for the new talents of single-seater racing. Even though this Grand Prix is generally not the most exciting of the year due to the lack of overtaking opportunities, combined with the poor grip of the Pirelli tires in the high heat, the 2020 edition was no exception to the rule.
After a qualification disrupted by a yellow flag in the final minutes, preventing the driver from Grasse from improving his time (8th at 0.4 seconds behind the championship leader Logan Sargeant), race 1 promised to be challenging in Catalonia. Benefiting from a poor start by his teammate Fernandez in front of him, the Frenchman gained a position and found himself in 7th place. After an initial Safety Car intervention, Théo was battling with the German Beckmann and then with the former championship leader Oscar Piastri, whom he overtook during the second race restart. Ultimately, Pourchaire finished the first Catalan event in 7th place in a race won by the experienced Jack Hughes, which granted him the right to start from 4th place on the grid the next day for the second race.
Despite a very good start, the young driver from Grasse got boxed in at the first corner and lost two positions. After an initial race restart and then a second one in the middle of the event, the positions remained fixed, with everyone trying to protect their tire setup as best as possible.
A total of 11 points were scored, and he snatched fifth place from Prema driver Vesti.
The next meeting will be on the Ardennes rollercoaster in Belgium, at Spa-Francorchamps in two weeks.
