Villefranche-sur-Mer honors Charlotte Salomon, a Jewish painter who died in Auschwitz. In 1939, in Nazi Germany, Charlotte Salomon stayed in Villefranche-sur-Mer.


Until September 30, the municipality is paying tribute to her and presenting reproductions of her works. The originals are carefully preserved at the Jewish Historical Museum in Amsterdam.

Charlotte Salomon died at 26 in Auschwitz. During the war, the young woman created 1,300 works. Her story was told in 2014 by the writer David Foenkinos.

The novel, Charlotte, was acclaimed by the prestigious Renaudot and Goncourt des Lycéens awards.
