Update on our Maralpin athletes at the Paralympic Games

Latest News

Out of the total of six athletes, three athletes from the Maralpine region were present on the various fields of the Paralympic Games today: Christophe Carlier, Geoffrey Wersy, and Agathe Pauli. Let’s review their results.

Para-triathlon

No medal for Geoffrey Wersy this Monday morning. The Nice-based triathlete, competing in the PTS2 category, finished in 7th place. Despite all his efforts, he couldn’t match his competitors on the day. His compatriot, the other French competitor in the category, Jules Ribstein, won gold with a time of 1h05’47. Americans Mohamed Lahna and Mark Barr completed the podium. Geoffrey Wersy was aiming for a top 5 finish in the final, but he had to settle for the 8th time with 1h16’59. However, the disqualification of Colombian Juan Esteban Patino Giraldo allowed him to move up in the rankings and finish 7th.

Para-swimming

No medal either for the French mixed relay team in the 4x100m medley, 34 points category. This morning, in the heats, they had brilliantly secured their qualification for the final by placing the fifth-best time in the heats with a time of 4’37″18. Comprising Anaรซlle Roulet, Hector Denayer, Laurent Chardard, and Agathe Pauli (who trains in Antibes), the French team secured the third place in their series. However, they faced disappointment in the final. France only finished in 7th place. No podium, but there was good news. They smashed the French record with 4’34″33. Australia claimed the gold, ahead of the Netherlands and Spain.

Wheelchair Basketball

The French wheelchair basketball team, led by the Cagnes-born Christophe Carlier, suffered a heavy defeat. On this third day, they were swept away by the British, true juggernauts of Group A. The British had already handed significant defeats to Germany (76-55) and Canada (88-58). This Monday, the French team lost 85-50, thus recording their third consecutive defeat after those against Canada (83-68) and Germany (72-64). However, this debacle does not (yet) eliminate the French team. But if the French team finishes at the bottom of the rankings, it will have to face the leader of Group B, the United States, in the quarterfinals. The match is scheduled for tomorrow at 9:30 PM.
