Located in the heart of the city and offering architectural and cultural heritage, the “รle de Beautรฉ” square and the Port district also benefit from the West-East tramway line. The mayor, Christian Estrosi, wants to further enhance these places by implementing a redevelopment of the รle de Beautรฉ square and Rue Cassini.
This Monday, the Mรฉtropole of Nice launched a public consultation to present the stakes for the รle de Beautรฉ square and Rue Cassini. Currently, a traffic study is underway to learn more about mobility operations in the Riquier and Port neighborhoods and to thus create a future development strategy.
A redevelopment of รle de Beautรฉ and Rue Cassini
The รle de Beautรฉ Square is considered one of the major places in the city center of Nice. Rue Cassini forms the link between the Promenade du Paillon and the Port Quays.
The project would involve transforming Rue Cassini into a “networked promenade axis” around Castle Hill and Old Nice. For the Square, the aim would be to “strengthen this network of squares” and thus enhance the economic activity of the Port district.
Extension and planning of the project
One of the major objectives of this project: to promote greening. The development of Rue Cassini would involve modifying the city’s infrastructure. Today, 70% of the spaces are dedicated to cars and public transport. The remaining 30% is for cyclists and pedestrians on the sidewalks.
Over the years, the space for cars will decrease to 60%, thus offering +10% to areas belonging to gentle modes and allowing for greening. A figure that could vary in the future: the spaces for public transport could reach 30% and the sidewalks 70%.
The work will begin in the second half of 2022. In the meantime, a team in charge of overseeing the development will be designated by this fall.
