Vaccination: 7 Major Questions We Have the Right to Ask (7)

Will the vaccine be available for everyone?

The Center for Global Development has calculated that rich countries have already reserved 1.1 billion doses of the future Pfizer/BionTech vaccine, one of the most advanced, out of a total announced production of 1.3 billion doses for next year. The United Nations, fearing the emergence of “vaccine nationalism,” is calling for an urgent $4.2 billion to ensure equitable access to the vaccine, under the guidance of the World Health Organization (WHO). This is an amount the G20 has not expressly committed to.

These promises do not seem to have convinced the NGO Oxfam, which criticized, in a statement to AFP, a “complete disconnect between the calls (from Europeans in particular) to make the vaccine a global public good and the vaccine race they are maintaining.”
