Vasarely Exhibition: Projection on the Facade of the Lympia Cultural Space

Latest News

This Saturday, October 21, starting at 7:30 PM, the museum is organizing an evening event featuring a 4D animation inspired by the works of Vasarely.

Victor Vasarely is the master of optical art. This new and completely unique trend emerged in the mid-20th century under the guidance of this Hungarian visual artist. Victor Vasarely is undoubtedly one of the most famous painters of geometric abstraction in France and around the world. After briefly studying medicine starting in 1925, he joined the Muhรซly school in 1929, known as the Bauhaus school of Budapest. Thus, Vasarely became acquainted with the trends of constructivism and discovered Abstract Art. In the same year, he created “Blue Study” and “Green Study.” Quickly, he aligned himself with an art trend aiming to be more communal and less individualistic, greatly influenced by the political context in Hungary at the time.

The Hungarian government began associating the various avant-garde movements with the progressive political movement that was developing. It was at this time, in 1930, that Vasarely left Hungary and moved to Paris. He started working as a graphic designer in an advertising agency, Havas. This experience quickly laid the foundation for his artistic exploration. The artist explored and questioned numerous themes such as the work on lines, material effects, games of shadow and light, and perspective.

The exhibition offered by the Lympia space since June 17, 2023, allows visitors to discover a vast collection of Vasarelyโ€™s works and studies. It highlights the fact that Vasarely was truly a forerunner of Computer Art. Throughout the exhibition’s duration, many researchers have come to discuss this topic. Thus, Daniel Canogar, Miguel Chevalier, Pascal Dombis, Dominique Pรฉtrin, Sabrina Rattรฉ, and Flavien Thรฉry have attempted to underscore the dynamism of the artistic and technological research initiated by Vasarely. Finally, for this last weekend of the exhibition, the cultural space will project this Saturday onto its facade a video mapping by the artist Frรฉdรฉric Alemany, inspired by Vasarelyโ€™s works. The projection will therefore take place this Saturday, October 21, starting at 7:30 PM.
