Vendée Globe: A small gennaker for Christmas?

TSE-4myplanet was at a standstill today, but not to wait for Santa Claus… It was time for analysis and tinkering for Alexia Barrier before getting back on the road.

While it was thought that the issues were resolved for the black and pink IMOCA, the skipper decided to make a stop to assess the damage sustained in recent days. A pause that logically distances her from her direct competitors: “I’m a bit slower compared to Clément (Giraud) and Miranda (Merron), but it’s a choice because I needed to slow down a bit to carry out some repairs. And on top of that, I burst my gennaker! It’s not too serious in itself because it’s a chill day today: the sun rose over a lovely blue sky this Christmas Day… And then I needed to rest after a few active frontal passages. So I’m taking my time before getting back to full speed.”

A small, lifesaving break that could save the rest of her journey toward Australia. “A second cape on the clock, it’s great! It always feels strange to look at the map of countries I don’t know: Australia, which is immense, New Zealand where the America’s Cup is happening right now… I had lost the habit of having land so close to my boat. And when I see the names of the Pacific islands, it makes me dream! It’s super cold and when the sky is gray, it creates a particular atmosphere… The Indian Ocean is truly a strange place. The contrast between what you experience on land and what you see at sea on the other side of the planet is incredible… And it’s my first Christmas at sea! And it will be the same for the upcoming New Year’s Day,” longs the Maralpian who is fulfilling her childhood dream.

But before that, it’s important to ensure that everything on board is working to get back on the route and perhaps wait for a more favorable weather window. For now, heading north before resuming the course to Cape Leeuwin!
