The intention was commendable but the game was exposed: to pose as the defender of the small against the big, a reenactment of David versus Goliath, as we have seen so often in history.

Then, one might (wrongly) think that the small ones are also his voters and that it’s always good to make them believe you are on their side. It’s simple, it’s effective, even if it’s illegal and known in advance. Even if the game doesn’t succeed, one can always claim to have tried. The blame is on others, the bad guys; the important thing is to be ranked among the good ones.

To say that all this ennobles public service…

The Nice administrative court, at the request of the Alpes-Maritimes prefect, suspended this Thursday afternoon the municipal decree of Villeneuve-Loubet, issued by Mayor Lionel Luca on Friday, October 30, allowing non-food stores to remain open despite the lockdown and national measures to fight the Covid-19 epidemic.

“The emergency judge believes that this municipal decree is likely to compromise the coherence, effectiveness, and readability of the measures taken by the State’s competent authorities,” the administrative court finally states in its report.

The Mayor of Villeneuve-Loubet, Lionel Luca, had issued this decree to denounce the unfair competition between small shops, forced to close, and large supermarkets during this lockdown period.
