Incredible but unfortunately true: There is a rape every seven minutes in France, and 10,000 rape complaints are filed each year (27 per day), but the number of convictions hovers around 1,400 per year*.
A few days before the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the interministerial plan presented by the Minister of Women’s Rights, Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, aims to “prevent the formation of violence.”
It also aims to “get victims out of this infernal cycle as quickly as possible” and “prevent the formation of violence, notably through education and public awareness.” With a budget of 66 million euros, it seeks to “ensure that no reported violence goes unanswered, whether judicially, healthwise, or socially.”
Because it is the leading department in France for the number of female victims of violence-related deaths (11 in 2012), the Prefect of Alpes-Maritimes, Adolphe Collat, mobilized associative partners during a public meeting held at the Palais des Rois Sardes, focusing on the topic: The definition and monitoring of the departmental mission, emphasizing the necessity of psychological care for victims.
A problem far from being resolved, with more than 2,000 complaints filed annually.
The mobilization of everyone is essential to tackle this scourge that undermines our society far beyond what one can imagine and to which we must respond.
