Join the Dance with Artist Virginie Broquet at the Pastor-Gismondi Gallery in Monaco

From August 20 to October 10, 2006, with an opening on September 22, Virginie Broquet will exhibit at the Pastor-Gismondi Gallery in Monaco in a show titled “Behind the Scenes of the Ballets.”

This Nice-based illustrator, known for capturing emotions and scenes of life, sneaked behind the scenes during rehearsals and performances of the Ballets de Monte-Carlo. Attentive to the dancers’ body expressions, costume details, and the delicacy of movements, Virginie Broquet transcribes her own choreography onto drawings, watercolors, enlargements, prints on veils, collages, and overprints. The artist has already immersed herself in Monaco’s iconic places through her travel sketchbooks (“Monaco Notebook, December 2004”) and illustrations (including collaborations with the Grimaldi Forum during the Art of Africa retrospective, and with SBM).

The rhythm of the artist takes you into a colorful, vibrant and sparkling round. An exotic air inspired by her many travels and expeditions during which she always brings her sketchbooks (Tokyo, Brasilia, Istanbul, New York, Bombay, Senegal, Beijingโ€ฆ). Her pictorial ballet is built by significant encounters (for example, with Richard Borhinger, with a planned travel notebook about Saint Louis in Senegal by Flammarion), her satirical and caricatural illustrations during the Nice Carnival (the “Colle ร  Gรจnes” float), her collaborations with the fashion, advertising, publishing, and comic book industriesโ€”not to mention a diplomatic ballet constructed through her extensive projects with embassies and the support of AFAA (French Association for Artistic Action).

Insatiable, curious, and always smiling, Virginie Broquet draws us onto a universal dance floor, where her memories of travels, stopovers, and diverse cultures emit a joyful, jubilant, and intoxicating musicality. A waltz of illustrations, in situ sketches, and testimonies between humor and glamour… to make your head spin!
