The mayor of Nice raises concerns that for a month, the city has been facing wandering populations who occupy public spaces and engage in aggressive begging, particularly in the presence of minors in different neighborhoods of Nice.
To gauge the extent of the phenomenon, which naturally increases during the summer season, the Municipal Police of Nice has conducted over 1,600 interventions and issued around a hundred fines since the beginning of the year, in accordance with the municipal bylaw on begging.
In a statement, Christian Estrosi highlighted this tense situation: “I am very concerned about this situation. I spoke this morning with the Prefect of Alpes-Maritimes. It is up to the Prefect and the Prosecutor to impose obligations to leave French territory. I expect total firmness from the State services.”
