Wearing a mask is becoming mandatory in a certain area in Nice.

This morning, Christian Estrosi announced several measures regarding the local fight against Covid-19. From 10 am to 1 am, residents of Nice must now wear a mask within a large perimeter of the city, which is mandatory.

“It’s the basic requirement for good protection”. Christian Estrosi emphasizes the importance of wearing a mask during these pandemic times. For him, it’s the best option at the moment to prevent contracting or spreading the virus to others. Starting today, and at least until August 7th, citizens must wear a mask within a specific perimeter. This perimeter stretches from Gambetta to the west, Thiers station to the north, Barla to the east, and from the port to Magnan in the south. “I don’t want to be the last mayor to make this decision. Vacationers need to feel that Nice is a safe place,” the Les Républicains mayor explained. According to a survey, 75% of the residents of Nice are in favor of wearing masks outdoors. This shows that citizens are concerned, and thus, they need protection, Christian Estrosi explained.

Preventive Measures Before Taking Action

For the next two days, those not wearing a mask within the defined perimeter will only receive a warning from law enforcement. But once this period is over, offenders will be fined 35 euros in accordance with the municipal ordinance. However, the mayor also stated that he has requested the prefect issue a prefectural order to increase the fine to 135 euros. Posters reminding residents of Nice that they are within the mandatory mask-wearing perimeter will be displayed in this area.

Christian Estrosi emphasized that it is, above all, about demonstrating responsibility during these difficult times. However, if people visiting Nice are not wearing a mask because they are unaware of the local ordinance, a warning will be preferred. According to him, the goal is not to catch anyone off guard.
