Wearing the kippa: maintaining the freedom to wear it and never giving up

Latest News

After the machete attack on a Jewish teacher on Monday, January 11, the president of the Israelite Consistory of Marseille, Zvi Ammar, “advised the Jewish community of [the city], temporarily, [not to] wear the kippa.”

This position has provoked various reactions, forcing the religious leader to clarify: “I am sad to say it, but I do it for reasons of prudence.”

According to Roger Cukierman, President of CRIF, asking French Jews who wish to do so to no longer wear the kippa would be “a defeatist attitude and a capitulation that would give a victory to the jihadists.”

For him, “We must resist and fight. It is the honor and freedom of French Jews to be able to freely practice their Judaism in their country, France.”

Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve will visit Marseille today to meet with the Jewish community. He will visit the city’s main synagogue, located on Breteuil Street, in the afternoon.
