As previously announced for some time now, the MAMAC will close its doors this Sunday, January 7. The project is to relocate the museum to a green lung following the renovation of the Promenade du Paillon.
The MAMAC will undergo renovation work for a period of 4 years. During these 4 years, the museum will be thoroughly revamped to meet current ecological standards. As stated by Christian Estrosi, โThe closure of the museum for these essential rehabilitation and enhancement works marks the beginning of a new era.โ A โnew eraโ indeed for the cultural spaces in Nice, heralding a promising future and exciting prospects that we are all eager to see evolve.
The museum will also continue its inclusive policy and initiatives aimed at all audiences: schools, associations, as well as the prison and hospital sectors. Starting January 2024, the team will ensure educational continuity with schools through offsite workshops!
โThe MAMAC will reach out to the residents of Nice, the Metro area, and internationally!โ

During this renovation period, the MAMAC will not be taking a break! You will find the MAMAC in several collaborations with museums in Nice. In mid-June 2024, the museum will collaborate with the Fernand Lรฉger Museum in Biot for the exhibition โFernand Lรฉger and the New Realisms.โ The exhibition will present a superb encounter between one of the masters of modernity and about sixty works from the MAMAC collection.
In mid-October, itโs the Matisse Museum that will bring together two of Niceโs greatest artists with works by Henri Matisse and Yves Klein. The majestic Stabile-Mobile (1970) by Alexander Calder, an abstract monumental steel artwork 8 meters tall and over 7 meters wide, has already been installed in front of the museum.
The MAMAC on the Move
The museumโs collection will also be exported internationally. This closure is a perfect opportunity for the museum to export its works from the second half of the 20th century internationally. By the end of April 2024, the MAMAC will present a large exhibition of Niki de Saint-Phalle at the prestigious Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri (USA). Over 80 works from the collection will be on loan. But thatโs not all; other projects will be organized in 2024 and 2025! Stay tuned.
And to Conclude in Style
Starting in February 2024, new sections will allow you to follow MAMACโs activities. This will take place online, with the project gradually rolled out on social media, YouTube, and the museumโs website featuring โTell Me a Work,โ โArtistsโ Words,โ and sections โMAMAC Behind the Scenesโ to discover the museum and its collection differently.
In the meantime, the MAMAC invites you to join us on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at 6 PM for a festive and friendly moment and the magical Firing of the Wall of Fire by Yves Klein.
