Where is the construction site intended to bring motorists from Voie Mathis to the A8? Update on the Paul Montel neighborhood works.

We now know a bit more about the progress of the work on this route, which is so frequently used by motorists. An update was provided in the presence of Christian Estrosi and the chief engineer of the site.

From above, nothing of the work is visible. However, this 185-million-euro project is progressing. “The route will be completed in the first half of 2025,” assures the Mayor of Nice.

Less Pollution, Less Traffic Jams

The aim of this project is to halve the number of users, down to 20,000 per day. It will also facilitate highway entry: “the development of Voie Mathis will extend to the A8 highway, and even to the highway entrance ramp,” states the engineer.

This project wasn’t simple, as it underwent “a lengthy procedure.” Notably in the midst were negotiations with SNCF and the military dock, the former Saint-Augustin station, to develop this axis of Voie Mathis.

According to Christian Estrosi, this tunnel under construction is a success for everyone: Voie Mathis will allow residents to no longer hear 40,000 car engines every day, the space will be greened with 120 trees and 10,000 shrubs, and pollution will be reduced. Motorists will also be delighted, as they will save time on this highly frequented road axis.

What about the traffic jams at the highway entrance? “We are going to eliminate the highway entrance coming from the Promenade des Anglais. We will make the highway entrance to what will be Giscard d’Estaing Avenue two lanes,” explains Christian Estrosi.

Where is the Voie Mathis construction site?

It’s a “major shift” in the Voie Mathis project, moving from underground work to surface work. After building the walls, handling waterproofing, constructing the roof, and going through the earthwork phase, it seems we are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. The current stage is the flooring: “a concrete slab with the road on top.”

What is missing: the installation of equipment: tunnel lighting, fire safety, air extraction… Also the surface work: the roadways above and finally the vegetation.

The landscaping will be completed when the flow of cars is reduced, meaning when motorists are already using the tunnel, due to the currently too intense traffic.
