In the context of the University Olympic Week, an interactive conference was held on Tuesday at the UFR Staps in Nice on the theme of disability in sports.
It was an opportunity for its participants to debate on promoting awareness about disability sports.
The second edition of the University Olympic Week takes place from May 29 to June 2.
Created by the French National Olympic Academy (ANOF), in partnership with the National Association of Staps Students (ANESTAPS) and the French University Sports Federation (FFSU), this educational event is aimed at students.
Twenty-five licensed athletes aged 18 to 35 meet for several debates on Olympism and its values throughout this week.
The symposium “Sports and Disability” aimed to discuss awareness, as well as the progress made or to be made, to improve the practice of sports for people with disabilities.
In this meeting, led by Laurence Munoz (lecturer and ANOF member), five speakers, all specialists in the subject, engaged in discussions with the participants. The purpose of the meeting was for the participants to debate on disability sports and its practitioners (whether they are amateurs or professionals), and the progress that needs to be made, especially in terms of awareness, to reduce the “exclusion” phenomenon that athletes with disabilities can sometimes face.
The conference was followed by physical activities, where the various participants could try some disability sports such as torball, wheelchair basketball, or blind soccer.
All while keeping in mind that while their ordeal in a wheelchair lasted only a few minutes, others have to cope with it for a lifetime.
