“Participating in a school newspaper is the school of citizenship. One learns to be responsible. In a newspaper, you don’t just write anything.” These two sentences spoken by Jacqueline Quéhen, head of CLEMI Nice, alone summarize the objective of developing school newspapers. One of the greatest satisfactions observed by teachers using this educational tool is that it enables struggling students to want to improve. They find through a concrete exercise the need to write correctly, to be understood by as many people as possible. This is one of the foundations of journalism. SMS language is prohibited and clarity is required.
Studying the media also helps to increase critical thinking, to learn to confront information to form one’s own opinion. Media education offers a range of activities alongside traditional teaching. The number of school newspapers is increasing. This year, 34 schools with over 300 children participated in the competition. CLEMI tries to spread it to as many children as possible. It is not easy. Due to lack of resources. Due to lack of teacher training and also journalists intervening throughout the year. The Junior Journalists’ Day and the Fortnight of the Press in school are not enough.
After an electoral campaign where morals and education were at the center of debates with a reform of the IUFM, media education could be a path to explore. As Jacqueline Quéhen says, “participating in a school newspaper is the school of citizenship.”
