The QS World University Rankings, a benchmark ranking of nearly 1,500 universities worldwide, has just delivered its verdict.
Along with those from the Times and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, it is one of the three benchmark university rankings worldwide. It is established by the British company Quacquarelli Symonds, founded in 1990 by Nunzio Quacquarelli, specializing in the analysis of institutions that provide a high level of education across the globe.
For this QS 2023 ranking, 1,442 institutions located in about 90 countries have been scrutinized through eight criteria: the academic reputation of the institution; the employability reputation of their graduates; the number of research citations divided by the number of teachers over a period of five years; the professor/student ratio; the number of foreign professors; the number of foreign students, etc.
Anglo-American universities dominate with 9 out of the top 10 placements (the Zurich Polytechnic School being the only European institution present), with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge (United States) taking first place, ahead of Cambridge (United Kingdom) and Stanford University (United States).
And France?
As in the past year, thirty-two French higher education institutions are featured in this year’s ranking, with two in the TOP 50 (same as in the previous ranking).
What are the top-ranked French universities?
The top French university in the ranking, Paris Sciences et Lettres (PSL), a consortium under a single brand of ten institutions (École normale supérieure, University of Paris Dauphine, and Mines Paristech, among others), climbs to the 26th place globally (up eighteen places) and the eighth place in Europe (up two places).
And what about the University of Nice Côte Azur, which in recent years has brought together UNS, Edhec, Skema, and other higher education institutions present in the area? It is ranked in the 751-800 category. In sports terms, one might say it features in the middle of the pack! A result that isn’t very encouraging, but it’s significant to be included. It’s an encouragement to redouble efforts to do better.
