Synopsis:
Philippe Abrams (Kad Merad), originally from Salon-de-Provence in the Bouches-du-Rhône and working for the postal service, finds himself transferred to Bergues, in the North near Dunkirk. He changes regions because he cheated to get transferred to Cassis. For him, the North is hell. Eventually won over by the region, the postal worker pretends to his incredulous wife, who stayed in the South, that his new life is awful and asks the locals to play along during her visit.
“Welcome to the Sticks” is the second feature film directed by Dany Boon. This film is announced as the big hit of the winter! And believe us, having seen it in a preview, this film is excellent! With its almost stereotyped scenes, “Welcome to the Sticks” presents a range of sketches that are hilariously funny: from the slow journey on the highway to the North to the discovery of “ch” becoming “s” and “s” becoming “ch”. It’s all incomprehensible to poor Philippe Abrams, magnificently played by Kad Merad!
“We, the southerners, really put ourselves in the shoes of this poor post office manager. It’s true that the North often has the image of rain, cold, and alcohol… But with this film, we realize that this region is very warm. Dany Boon has shown us its true face,” critiques an audience member. Indeed, as Dany Boon says, and as it is said in Bergues: when you go to the north, you cry, and when you leave, you cry too. By the way, Dany Boon shared an anecdote, revealing a secret: “The bicycle scene, where we’re supposed to be drunk, well, we were actually drunk! At one point in the film, we pee on a bridge. To do that, we have a trick: we have a pouch that we hide under the arm and with a pump, we send the pee stream. But since I was in a shirt, we couldn’t find an angle to hide the pump on camera. So we decided to do it without the pouch. We drank beer until we were drunk.”
And for those who might doubt the real “comedy” of this film, because some might think without having seen it that the film could be heavy. Well, NO! “We have a great time watching this film, we can’t stop laughing,” responds a viewer. Leaving the cinema, some are even already thinking about buying the DVD as soon as it is released.
